Gene M. Whitaker, age 75 of Longleaf Country Club, Southern Pines, NC died on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at his home.

He was born on May 19, 1935 at the family farm in Scott County, KY to the late Cecil Gregg Whitaker and Pauline Conway Dalton. He was a graduate of Cynthiana High School, Class of 1954, Cynthiana, KY.

Mr. Whitaker was a veteran of his country and served in the Air National Guard. He retired from Pinehurst Country Club after 15 years of service as a starter and Ranger. He was the former co-owner and operator of Party Lane Carry Out in Kettering, OH from 1980-1996. Prior to that, he was employed in the transportation and trucking industry, rising to the position of Terminal Manager for Eastern Express. He also was a former high school football referee in the Dayton, Ohio area for many years. Mr. Whitaker was a member of Silas Baptist Church in Cynthiana, KY. He was also a member of The Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio – Millennium Lodge 0779, Dayton, Ohio. He was an avid golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ruth Barrett Whitaker; a daughter, Tammy Cox and husband Randy of Wellington, KY; a son, Gene M. Whitaker II and wife Jennifer of West Liberty, KY; step-daughter, Deborah Botham of Dayton, OH; and step-son, Richard Botham and wife Karen of Haslet, TX. He is also survived by a step-sister, Pat Tussey of Cynthiana, KY; and four grandchildren: Andrew Cox, Raylee Whitaker, David Botham, and Kelsie Whitaker.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. At the chapel of Ware Funeral Home in Cynthiana, KY with Rev. Curtis Coots officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Battle Grove Cemetery in Cynthiana, KY.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. At Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Southern Pines, NC with Fr. John Tampa officiating.
