After schooling in Blairgowrie, James learned the trade of a tinsmith. Later he had his own ironmonger and tinsmith shop where he employed a few men.

On 12 February 1843 James married Catherine "Kate" Kennedy at a Church in Dumferline, Scotland. They lived at 5 High Street in Blairgowrie in 1851.

They came to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1852 with James's family. In 1857 they moved to Goderich, Ontario where James was inspector of weights and measures for a number of years. Then for a few years he was in business with his brother John also a tinsmith on Kingston Street. When John left the business to return to United States, he moved the business to Crabb's block. Later a building on West Street was purchased and he and his son Alex entered into a partnership which continued to February 1891. He then estblished a separate business in the McLean block which he conducted to his death on 24 May 1892 and was buried in Maitland Cemetery at Goderich, Ontario.
