He was born in Duncan's Retreat. Duncan's Retreat was located on the north side of the Virgin River, where Mukuntuweep Creek enters the Virgin River. It was located 4 miles east of Virgin and 3.5 miles west of Grafton (on the south side of the current Highway 9, between Mile Markers 24 and 25).
