Confederate veteran. Clerk in CSA Treasury for one year and then joined the 14th Tennessee. After the war, married on December 22, 1866, to Florence Herring (born in Clarksville, Tennessee, on November 28, 1840 and died in Chattanooga on March 7, 1920). Moved to Chattanooga in 1890. Employed by First National Bank in Chattanooga and President of Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce.
