George was born "Johan George Hill" in Walter, Russia to Johannes and Maria Katharina (Hohn) Hill. His parents and siblings lived in Walter, Russia until they resettled in Brunnental, Russia, on Dec. 1857.

He married Katherine Margaretha Batt in Brunnenthal, Russia in 1878 and immigrated to the United States in 1907. They left Liverpool, England on November 12, 1907 with 7 of their 9 children and arrived in Boston, Massachusetts aboard the SS Saxonia on November 22, 1907. The two oldest sons, Fred and George Jr, came with their families a year later.

Their final destination was Marion County, Kansas, where they joined George's brother-in-law, Jacob Batt. Jacob and his wife Katie had immigrated from Russia to Kansas in 1886.

A Kansas banker, Mr Mehlinger, sponsored the family to come to the US. Apparently, all immigrants were required to have an American resident sponsor upon their arrival in the USA. This requirement was to serve as a guarantee that the immigrant would not be a burden on the American society.
