SHAKOPEE, Minn. Graveside service for James "Shorty" Irwin Chebahtah, 77, Shakopee, Minn., will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Deyo Mission Cemetery under direction of Comanche Nation Funeral Home.

He passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011, at a nursing facility in Shakopee, Minn.

He was born March 9, 1934, in Lawton, the son of Leonard William and Mary Ann Paddyaker Chebahtah. He grew up in various places as his dad taught school. He attended high school in Hondo, N.M., where he played basketball, ran track and was a boxer. He was state runner-up and played semi-pro basketball for the Phoenix Red Skins. He worked as a laborer in construction and made his home in Shakopee, Minn., for the past 40 years. He was a member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and enjoyed being with his friends.

Survivors include three sisters: Lenore Grissom, Bellflower, Calif.; Emma and husband, Harold, Griffin, Bradwell, Ky.; and Marie Chebahtah, Indiahoma; two brothers: Julian Chebahtah, Tacoma, Wash.; and Richard Leon Chebahtah, Peoria, Ariz.; a special friend, Shirley Horan, Minneapolis, Minn.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents; a sister, Gay Chebahtah; and a brother, Robert Chebahtah.
