FATALLY BURNED.
MRS. HUGH McPHAIL MEETS
TRAGIC DEATH.
Her Clothing Takes Fire From
Grate and She is Horribly
Injured.
Mrs. Hugh McPhail, an old and well
known resident of this city, died at an
early hour this Monday morning from
injuries received Saturday night, when
she was terribly burned while standing
before a grate fire at her home on West
Market street.
Mrs. McPhail, who was about seventy
years of age, was alone at the time of the
accident, and had just prepared to retire.
While standing in front of the grate her
night dress caught fire and in a moment
the poor woman was wrapped in flames.
She ran around the room screaming
while trying to tear the burning garment
from her person, but finally sank
down exhausted.
Her cries attracted the attention of
Mrs William Amick, who lives in the
other part of the house, and running in
she found Mrs. McPhail in a heap on the
floor with nearly all her clothing burned
away, and suffering awful agony. Assistance
was summoned and Dr. Podelewski sent for,
who dressed the poor woman's burns. She lingered
until 12:30 this morning, when death put
an end to her sufferings.
The maiden name of the unfortunate
woman was Margaret Hallan. She was
first married to Michael Donnelly,
who died many years ago. She
was married to Hugh McPhail about
twenty-four years ago. She leaves two
children by her former husband, James
Donnelly, of Pittsburgh, and Mrs.
Smith, of this city.
