Sometime after the 1860 census and before the August 12, 1870 census, there was an accident and Jonas is listed as being blind. He was there after referred to as "Blind Jonas"
According to notes received from ancestors of Dean and Norma Jean King, received via Robbin Pridmore, Jonas Brown, Sr. may have lost his eyesight from a steam engine explosion...Others heard that a well blasting accident caused it.
