Cecil Burgess Abney, Sr, age 94, passed away Saturday, November 6th, 2021, at the VA Medical Center in Lexington, KY. He was born April 21st, 1927, in Rockcastle County, KY to the late Morgan and Ida Abney. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Bowman Abney. Cecil was a carpenter and an Air Force Veteran of WWII. He enjoyed wood working, jig saw puzzles and loved the outdoors. Cecil loved bluegrass gospel music and was of the Baptist faith and a member of Clear Creek Baptist Church.
Other than his wife and parents he was preceded in death by an infant son, Darrell Abney, and two grandsons, Wallace Abney, Jr., and Travis Robinson. Five brothers, Robert, Everett, Hobart, William, and Elijah Abney and six sisters, Ellie McCracken, Myrtle Chasteen Adams, Annie McCracken, Flossie Peters, Evelyn Bullens, and Thelma Phillips.
Cecil is survived by six children, Cecil (Joyce) Abney, Jr., of Berea, KY, Ken (Jean) Abney, of Berea, KY, Donald B. (Brenda) Abney, of Mount Vernon, KY, Genevieve (James) Adams, of Berea, KY, Ronald W. (Scotty) Abney, of Mt. Vernon, KY, and Wallace Edward Abney, Sr., of Mount Vernon, KY. One sister, Eula Abney of Berea, KY. Ten grandchildren, Rebecca Hope Sturgill, Dee Abney, Chris Hembree, Chad Abney, Shannon Wallace, a special grandson-in-law Tony Wallace, Jill Abney, Laura Schriver, Michael Abney, Morgan Abney, and Reona Rawlins along with fifteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 1:30 Tuesday, November 9th, 2021, at Davis-Witt Cemetery in Rockcastle County. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
