wife of Daniel H. Ortman

In Memory of Martha J. Ortman
October 23, 1905 - December 10, 1999
Martha J. Ensz was born to Freni and Jacob Ensz, October 23, 1905 near Marion, South Dakota. She passed away at the Tieszen Memorial Home on December 10, 1999 at the age of 94.
As a teenager, Mom accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at EMB tent revival meetings conducted by David and George Schultz. Following her conversion she was baptized by Rev. Jacob A. Tieszen and joined the Bethel Mennonite Church. On October 23, 1923 she married Daniel H. Ortman of Marion to which were born four children, Harley, Mable, James, and Jesse.
After 26 years of marriage Dad passed away and Mom stayed on the farm to raise the family. She found fulfillment in crocheting, sewing, gardening, and the many hours she spent entertaining her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved lively gospel music and special church services. She was happiest having family and friends around her kitchen table. Dad would invite guest speakers and missionaries where Mom would feed them Sunday dinners and visit. Her birthday was special because it was also the day of her baptism, wedding, and the birth of her first grandchild. In February of 1991 Mom moved into an apartment in Marion where she lived until October of 1999 when she moved into the Tieszen Memorial Home. She was preceded in death by her parents, four infant siblings, her husband, two brothers, Dave and John, a sister Mary Gross and a son Harley.
She is survived by her children Mable and husband Elmer Underwood of Sioux Falls, James and wife Eileen of Rapid City, Jesse and wife Jeneane of Marion and daughter-in-law, Irene of Marion; nine grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren; one sister, Luella Wiens of Canistota and a host of relatives and friends.
Her favorite Bible verses were in Psalm 91, Psalm 23, Psalm 150 and Phil. 1:21 "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain". Her greatest desire was that all of her family has a personal relationship with Jesus.
