Alvin was born in New Vienna, Clinton Co., Ohio, the son of Franz and Caroline Earthman Von Hopffgarden.
On July 24, 1890 he married Ida Evelyn Wardlow who was a great granddaughter of Patrick Hall. (She is buried in the Wardlow Cemetery in Washington Twp., Brown Co., Ohio.) The family had four sons: Andrew, William (Dewey), Joseph, and Lawrence Washington "Huffy" Huffgarden.
He died in Washington Twp., Brown Co., Ohio in 1948 and was the last person buried in the Hall Cemetery.
