Mass of Christian burial for Jennifer M. Alvarez, 18, Eudora, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Church in Lawrence. The Revs. Michael Scully and Paul Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery in Eudora.
She died Tuesday, March 31, 1992, at Humana Hospital in Overland Park from injuries suffered in a one-car accident Thursday on Kansas Highway 10, just west of Interstate 435 in Lenexa.She was driving east on the highway, when a gust of wind caused the car to swerve. She overcorrected the vehicle, crossed the right lane and overturned on the side of the road, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported.
She was born March 26, 1974, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Joseph M. and Barbara Estes Alvarez. She had lived in Eudora the past five years after moving there from Linwood.
A senior at Eudora High School, she was a member of the girls' basketball and volleyball teams. The basketball team recently participated in the state 3A tournament.
She was a member of the Cardinal Club for four years and had received the "Hustle Award" for volleyball and basketball during her sophomore, junior and senior years. She recently had signed a letter of intent to play volleyball and basketball at Fort Scott Community Junior College in the fall.
She was a member of the all-tournament team at the Wellsville Invitational Basketball Tournament this season. She was a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and a former president of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) at Eudora High School. She also had been president of her sophomore and junior classes.
She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and also attended the Holy Family Catholic Church in Eudora.
Survivors include her parents; a sister, Kimberly Alvarez; and a brother, Michael Alvarez.
The family suggests memorials to the Jennifer Alvarez Fund, which has been established at Kaw Valley State Bank in Eudora.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence.
