Adam "Nelse" Nelson Smith was a private in the Civil War in the 31st Iowa infantry Company F. After he was wounded, he was transferred to the 4th Veterans Reserve Corps Company C at Rock Island from where he was discharged. While at Rock Island, he married Fanny Harris and they moved to Woodbury county, Iowa, where Adam's family resided. They had four children, Charles, Egbert, Lyda (or Eliza) and Levi. In 1883, Fanny died and was buried at Rock (then Bethel) cemetary in Woodbury county. Three years almost to the day, Adam died leaving three of his children orphaned. His sister Charlotte and her husband Abner hunt took over his property and took care of his children.
