Born to Carl Anton Holmquist and Alma Cecilia Sullivan Holmquist in 1927 along with twin brother Richard, Don was raised in a large Depression era family on the East Side of Joliet. Brother Leonard was born in 1919, sister Phyllis in 1921 (died of rheumatic fever in 1933), Howard in 1923, and Gordon in 1925.

Don dropped out of Joliet Township High School, joined the U. S. Navy in World War II and served in St. Louis and Norman, Oklahoma. While in the service he earned his GED. After the war Don resumed working at the EJ&E Railroad.

He married Frances Mary Edwards in October of 1949 and first child Darrell was born in 1950. Nancy arrived in 1952, Wendy in 1960, Donna in 1965, and Alan in 1966.

Don left the railroad in 1961 and worked as a custodian, groundskeeper, maintenance man, and foreman until retiring from Joliet Central High School in the late 1980's.

He developed lung cancer in early 1994 and passed away from its effects on March 27, 1995.
