US Congressman. Born on a farm in Mifflinburg, Union County, Pennsylvania, he moved to Springfield, Ohio with his family when he was a child. He attended Northwood Institute of Ohio from 1853 to 1854 and graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1857. While at Miami, he was one of the founding members of the Sigma Chi Fraternity in 1855. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1858, and began to practice as an attorney in Dayton, Ohio. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1859 and became a law partner of Flamen Ball. Elected as a Republican to represent Ohio's 2nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, he served from 1883 to 1885. He declined to become a candidate for renomination in 1884. He was killed from a fall in an elevator accident at the Lincoln Inn in Cincinnati when he was 55 years old.
