Rites for Soldier Arranged Wednesday

Funeral services for Pvt Robert L. Wilkerson, 24 years old, 628 North Beville Avenue, killed June 22, 1944, at St. Andre de l'Epine, France, will be held at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Moore Mortuaries Peace Chapel. Burial will be in Washington Park Cemetery.

A lifelong resident of Indianapolis, he was graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. He was inducted in April, 1943, and went overseas in April, 1944, with the 29th Infantry Division.

Surviving are the parents, Mr and Mrs William J Wilkerson; four brothers, Charles D Wilkerson; Paul L; Max and David E. Wilkerson, Indianapolis; and grandmother Mrs Carrie Rhoades, Crawfordsville.

Pvt Wilkerson was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.

Pvt Wilkerson was part of the 116th Infantry Regiment, assigned to the 29th Division. The 116th took part in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, spearheading the assault. They fought through the bocage towards St Lo. There was a lot of fierce German resistance in the St Andre de l'Epine and St Georges d'Elle areas. It wasn't until July 18, 1944, that St Lo was finally freed.
