Martin Loftis Gentry was born June 29, 1894, in Gainesboro, Jackson Co., Tenneessee. His parents were Simon L. Gentry and Mary Ann "Polly" Loftis Gentry. He lived in Gainesboro, in his parents' household, until his late teens or early twenties.

In June 1917 Martin signed his WWI draft card, stating that he was living in Springfield, Greene Co., Missouri, as a single man and working as a machinist for the Frisco Railroad. Not long after he signed that card, Martin enlisted in the U. S. Army. He fought in World War I from 1918 to 1919 as a corporal.

When he returned to Missouri in civilian status after the war's end, 26-year-old Martin married 22-year-old Elizabeth E. Penland on June 16, 1921, in Marshfield, Webster County, Missouri. She was the daughter of William T. Penland and his wife Mary Austin Penland.

By 1930 Martin and Elizabeth were living in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, where he worked as a warehouse foreman in the "transfer" industry. They had no children. Family records indicate, however, that the couple adopted a niece Billie Ruth Gentry, daughter of Thomas Melvin Gentry.

Martin died on September 1, 1951, probably in Missouri, at the age of 57. He was buried in the Springfield National Cemetery, Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. His wife Elizabeth died 42 years later in September 1993 in St. Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.
