Aged Spotsylvanian Dies
A.H. Chewning, Civil War Survivor, Buried Monday at New Hope Cemetery

Mr. Abb Chewning, a lifelong resident of Spotsylvania County, 89 years old, died at his home near Parkers, on Feb. 24th, following an illness of three months. Mr. Chewning sustained a broken leg in a fall three months ago and has since been in declining health. When the war between the states broke out, Mr. Chewning offered his services to the Confederacy and was detailed to the Furnace Foundry in Spotsylvania as he was an expert blacksmith. At the close of the Civil War he retired to the farm and has since been engaged in agricultural pursuit. He was a kind and considerate neighbor and good Christian citizen and leaves a host of friends.
Surviving him are five sons and five daughters as follows:
Messrs. Russell and Irving Chewning of Spotsylvania County, Morgan, Clifton and Ollie Chewning of Washington D.C., Mrs. Grant C. Smith, Mrs. Bradley Reid, Mrs. Talmadge Reid of Washington, Mrs. Fred Mason of Gold Dale, Orange County, VA and Mrs. Dudley Wiltshire of Mine Run, Orange County, VA.
