Mr. John T. Chewning died at his home near Ely's Ford Friday night, aged 77 years. He had been out, feeding his horse, and was returning to the house when fell at the door with a stroke of paralysis and died the same evening. He leaves a wife, three daughter and six sons. Funeral Sunday, conducted by Reverend Decatur Edwards.

He was the son of William V. Chewning and Permelia Henderson. He married Margaret Frances Tinder in Orange County, Virginia 25 September 1859.
