Ernestine May Lawson (Mrs. C.A. Lawson), 90, a resident of Adventist Center in Lumberton, formerly of Hattiesburg, had an angel escort as she went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, February 9, 2003. Her earthly body will lie in state at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home, Hattiesburg, from 5:00 p..m. until 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2003. Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg with Dr L. Russell Bush, Jr., former pastor of Main Street Baptist Church, officiating. Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements with interment at Highland Cemetery.


She was preceded into her new life by her husband, Clarence Aubrey "C.A." Lawson, loving parents, William Thomas "W.T." May and Sabra Nancy McInnis May as well as her dear sister, Uree "Ree" May Gleen. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William Eugene "Gene" Lawson and Marilyn Elizabeth McLendon Lawson of Alabama and granddaughter, Mrs. Ernie (Karen Camille) Dukes of Florida. Her daughter and son-in-law, Nancibeth Lawson Fleming and Raymond V. Fleming of Purvis granddaughters, Mrs. Josh (Mrs. Marjorie Allys) "Margie" Sims of Hattiesburg, Katherine Ann "Katie" Tillman, and Christianna Elizabeth "Christi-Beth" Cirino of Purvis, and great-grandson, William Kelton Sims of Hattiesburg. Among the nieces and nephews that survive her are Dudley McKim Glenn and his wife, Melanie of Gloster, LA, and their children, Sabra Elizabeth Glenn Carson of Charlotte, NC, Sarah Norred Glenn of Norfolk, VA, and Robert Benjamin "Ben" Glenn of Columbia, SC.

She was born September 14, 1912, in Mendenhall, MS. As a child, their family moved to Starkville where her father was employed by the Agricultural Extension Service to Mississippi State. As a child, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour at the age of nine and was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Starkville, MS. She attended public schools in Starkville and graduated salutatorian of her class at the age of 16. She received her Bachelor's Degree at MSCW (the "W") in three years. She taught elementary and secondary school throughout Mississippi. After marrying C.A. Lawson on March 2, 1943, she moved to Hattiesburg where she became a homemaker and devoted member of Main Street Methodist Church. She was actively involved in the church program, the Dura Segrest Sunday School class, served on the Administrative Board, Chairman of the homebound Department, Co-Founder of the Sunshine Club for Senior Citizens and many other positions as called upon by the Church leaders. Throughout her life, she diligently provided maternal and parental leadership not only for her children but also her grandchildren. She was a mentor in the true sense of the word.


In 1960, she returned to public education and taught seventh grade mathematics at Main Street School and Thames Junior High School. Using her in-depth knowledge of mathematics as well as her extensive research and advanced study skills, she developed programs of instruction and instructional modules.. Using these capabilities she introduced complex and "state-of-the-art" mathematical concepts and functions in terms that could be comprehended by young adolescents. She was a noted speaker for technical education seminars within the Southeastern United States. She was regarded as a "subject matter expert" in arithmetic and mathematics at Kindergarten through Secondary School levels and was a published author in professional journals and publications. She was responsible for publishing several books in her area of expertise.

After the deaths of her mother, husband and father, she decided to join Main Street Baptist Church. She was a member and strong supporter of the ministerial programs. Pallbearers for Mrs. Lawson were: B.J. Aultman, Bill Ferrell, Dudley Glenn Jr., Dr. Terry Goodbread, Jay Jernigan, Josh Sims, Brent Welborn and Robert Woodman. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Building Fund of Main Street Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
