Sammie was one of the farm dogs of the Hass family during the mid and late 1970's. He spent his entire life on the Hass family farm in Sioux County, Iowa. Sammie was born as a part a litter of pups to the family dog, Painie. He had a close friendship with the Hass family's oldest son, who claimed Sammie as his own. Sammie was good at herding cattle. He never stopped behaving like a puppy and occasionally got himself into a lot of mischief.

Sammie and his mother lived on the farm with the Hass family and remained behind on the farm after all but one member of the Hass family moved away to South Dakota in 1977. Afterwards, the two young sons of the Hass family missed the dogs; but, it was believed that the two farm dogs would have had too much difficulty adapting to a more confining life in town.

Sammie's death was reported to have been the result of an accident involving a piece of farming equipment used for mowing. The father of the Hass family was the only person living on the farm at the time of the accident; and, he never reported what he did with the dog's remains.
