Phineas Cole of Bradford, Massachusetts, was a sergeant in Capt. Nathaniel Gage's Co. of minutemen (Col. James Frye's Regt.), and he was present at the first military engagement of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, on April 19, 1775. He subsequently served in Capt. Joshua Reed's Co. (Col. John Robinson's Light Infantry Regt.) as a 2nd lieutenant, and as a 1st lieutenant in Capt. Eliphalet Hardy's Co. (Col. Wade's Regt.) and in Capt. Jonathan Ayers' Co. (Col. Nathaniel Wade's Essex Co. Regt).

Phineas Cole was the fourth son of Samuel Cole, Jr., of Boxford, and his wife Bethiah Hardy, of Bradford, both towns in Essex Co., Massachuetts. His parents were married October 5, 1738, in Boxford. Phineas was a great-grandson of John and Sarah (Aslebee) Cole of Lynn in Essex Co. It was his great-grandmother Sarah Cole who was accused of witchcraft and imprisoned in October 1692, and later tried and acquitted in January 1693.

On December 20, 1765, Phineas married Abiah Haseltine, also of Bradford. She died on August 31, 1775, in her 31st year. Phineas took as his second wife Catharine Hudson, of Boston, on May 17, 1776. She died on August 3, 1795, also in Bradford. Then when he was nearly 70 years old, Phineas married as his third wife the widow Rhoda Buswell, on January 21, 1813, in Pelham, New Hampshire, where he resided in later life.

By his first wife, Phineas had children Susannah (b. Oct. 26, 1766), Sarah (b. Jan. 31, 1768), Deborah (b. May 29, 1769), Abigail (May 10, 1771 - Sept. 7, 1775), Bethiah (Apr. 27, 1773 - Sept. 7, 1775), and son Phineas (b. May 3, 1775). By his second wife, Phineas had one more daughter Catherine (bp. May 23, 1779). All his children were born in Bradford.

Phineas was an innkeeper in Bradford and in Pelham. His death was announced in newspapers in early 1823, for example, the Palladium of Oswego, New York. It read simply, "Died: Pelham, N. H. Lt. Phineas Cole, aged 78 years. Rev. Soldier." He is probably buried in or near Pelham although his name does not appear in any town cemetery records.
