Baptised John Aubin, 08 Apr 1838 in the Parish of Trinity, on the island of Jersey, Channel Islands. He was the second son of Charles and Marie (Queree) Aubin.
His mother passed away when he was two years old. Ann Thomas, their housekeeper, stepped in and took care of helping raise the children. In 1849, Charles Married Ann and they went on to produce another four children. John had medical training before he emmigrated to New Zealand aboard the "Ganges" in 1863, arriving in Auckland, New Zealand on 12 Oct 1863.
Other passengers of note were Philip and Elizabeth Lempriere, (brother and sister).
John settled in Alexandra (now known as Pirongia) where he was a successful businessman, chemist (pharmacist) and doctor. Here he become highly esteemed among the Maori and Europeans alike. He was also trained in dispensing the Small Pox vaccine. Within three years of settling in Alexandra, he met and married Ann Elizabeth Dobel Lempriere niece of Philip and Elizabeth. Ann was trained as a teacher, back on Jersey.
John also built a second store in nearby Te Awamutu, and had two of his nephews come out from Jersey to New Zealand to assist him in running them. The nephews were Aubin Ahier and George Midford Aubin Ahier.
John and Ann had nine children of which three died young. John lived to the age of fifty.
John was active in the Town Council, the School board and various other committees.
Frequently, John would go by the name Jean, (the French for John) in fact, he used it interchangably with John.
His funeral was very well attended by European and Maori alike from the surrounding districts.
