Robert Phineas Douthit, Page county pioneer, died Friday afternoon in the Hand hospital in Shenandoah, following an operation for the removal of a limb. Mr Douthit had been ill for some time, and the limb was removed in the hope of giving him a longer lease of life, but his heart was too weak to stand the strain.

Mr Douthit came with his parents to Page county in 1869 and settled on a farm three and a half miles north of Clarinda. He has lived with in a radius of a few miles from Clarinda the remainder of his life.

The following obituary has been given The Journal for publication:

Robert Phineas Doughit was born Aug 2, 1850, in Indiana county, Pa. He was the oldest son of Nathan and Sarah Douthit. As a boy he attended the country school, and later attended the Academy for boys at Elerton, Pa.

He united with the church at the age of seventeen, and for over fifty years has been in the Clarinda congregation, with the exception of two years, which was in Hepburn, on account of location.

For the last few years, Mr Douthit has been in failing health, which has prevented his attending church services, but has always shown interest in the work of the church, and in the building of the first brick structure, acted as a member of the building committee.

At his place in the year 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret McDonald of College Springs. To this union have been born eight children: Mrs Lulu Burwell, Mrs Anna Jillson, Mrs Myrtle Burwell, Charley, Harry, Mrs Hattie Graham, Calvin and Riley. Two of these have preceded their father in death. Besides these, he leaves his wife and twenty grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Also four brothers, Stacy and John of Clarinda, and Seton and Rufus of Nebraska, and one sister, Mrs J.V. Pfander of Clarinda.

His life has been given in service to others. Wherever there was sickness or sorrow, he was there to assist and to comfort.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the United Presbyterian church in this city conducted by Rev Carl Person. Psalms were sung by a quartet, consisting of Miss Marjorie McDowell, Mrs G.D. Smith, Lee Johnson and Neil Johnston. The pall bearers were Fred Fisher, Charles Williams, Herman Waggoner, Robert Otte, Fred Grebert and Ed Sunderman. The floral offerings were especially profuse and beautiful. Many old friends were unable to attend on account of the bad roads, but the church was filled as it was with those who had come to pay their last respects.

Among the out of town relatives at the funeral were Mr and Mrs C.A. Burwell and daughters, Mrs Clyde Johnson and Mrs Russell Stearns of Gravity, Mr and Mrs Earl Graham and children of Shenandoah, Mr and Mrs C.R. Douthit and family of Shenandoah, and L.A. Jillson of Cherokee. CLARINDA JOURNAL, Clarinda, Iowa, Mar 11, 1929
