William W. Watkins was born in the fall of 1825 in Coahuila y Tejas, Mexico, somewhere West of the Sabine River.

William's first wife was Elizabeth (Eliza) Martin from Mississippi. Eliza Martin was a daughter of William Martin and Harriet Barksdale. Eliza's older brother was Thomas Jefferson Martin. The Martin family emigrated to Texas in 1839 from Mississippi. William W. Watkins purchased land in Sabine County, Texas, from his mother-n-law Harriet (Barksdale) Martin-Slaughter, a widow of both William Martin and William Slaughter, and all the Martin heirs in Sabine County, near Pineland, TX in 1853. William and Eliza had eight children. Their 8th child, died in infancy.

William's second wife was Elizabeth (Bettie) Woolam from Tennessee. Bettie Woolam was the daughter of Bartholomew Woolam and Martha Culbreath. Bettie's older brother was Rev John C Woolam. William and Bettie had two children, John W (later known as John L) and a daughter Illa (legally known as Ida Watkins) Woods. William purchased land in San Augustine County, Texas, near Tebo in 1870. William and Bettie lived there, until his death in 1893 at the age of 68. Bettie later moved to Sabine Parish, LA and lived with her son John L Watkins and family until her death.

Eight of William's ten children from both marriages gave him grandchildren, except two, his name sake William W. Watkins Jr and an infant of his 1st marriage with his wife Eliza Martin.

William was a Private in Crump's Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Lane's Regiment, 1st Texas Partisan Rangers, Company M).
