Husband of Estelle E. (Vermeer) Achterhof

Floyd Achterhof, 83, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Sioux Center, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Rock Rapids Health Centre.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at New Life Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Burial will be in Sioux Center Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Floyd E. Achterhof was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Sioux Center, the son of Ralph and Maggie (Van Kley) Achterhof. He grew up in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center Public School.

On June 18, 1941, he was united in marriage to Estelle Vermeer at the home of her parents near Orange City, Iowa. Following their marriage, they lived in Sioux Center, where he worked in furniture sales. From December 1942 until November 1945, he served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Sioux Center. During his life, he was self-employed in sales and he helped start two furniture stores, The Furniture Marts in Sioux Center and Hawarden, Iowa. For the past 20 years, he had worked for Hillyard Chemical Company, selling cleaning supplies, retiring in 1986.

In February 1987, he suffered a stroke that would leave him unable to walk. For 10 years, he was able to stay in his home because of the devoted care he received from his wife, Estelle. In 1997, the couple became residents of the Rock Rapids Health Centre and in this way they were able to receive the expert care he needed while being able to stay together. During the summer of 2004, he developed various declining health difficulties.

Throughout his life, he had been a member of the Reformed Church of America and in 1990, became a charter member of the New Life Reformed Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Estelle of Rock Rapids; three children, Michael Achterhof of Boyden, Iowa, Richard Achterhof of Orange City, Iowa, and Patricia Larsen of Phoenix, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene Achterhof of Camden, Maine; and two sisters-in-law, Jean Achterhof of Glenwood, Iowa, and Charlotte Vermeer of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marsha Kay; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Florence.
