Baron of Thirsk and knight. Younger son of Sir William de Mowbray and his wife, Agnes D'Aubeney, grandson of Nele Mowbray and William D'Aubeney, brother and heir to Nigel de Mowbray.

Husband of Miss de Furnival, daughter of Thomas de Furnival of Worksop and Bertha de Ferrers. They married after 13 April 1237, the date of their marriage grant, and had two daughters:
Joan, wife of Robert de Mohaut
Elizabeth, wife of Adam de Newmarch

Secondly, husband of Maud de Beauchamp, eldest daughter of Sir William de Beauchamp and Ida Longespee. They were married before 1257 and had one son, Sir Roger, Lord Mowbray.

Sir Roger had the grant of a market and faire at Hoveringham, Yorkshire in 1252, summoned for service in Scotland in 1258, and against the Welsh in 1260.

Maud would later marry Roger le Strange.
