Prominent among the enterprising and progressive agriculturists of Clay county is John N. Redifer, who is successfully engaged in his independent calling in Perry Township, having a finely improved and well ,managed farm. A son of Charles L. Redifer he was born June 22, 1842, in Augusta County, Virginia where the first six years of his life were spent. But ten years old when he came to Clay county with his father. John N. Redifer began two years later to become self- supporting, for a number of years thereafter working as a farm laborer. In August 1862 he enlisted Company M, Fourth Indiana Cavalry, went South with his regiment, and was at Stone River, Big Shantie, Peach Tree Creek, Burnt Church, Strawberry Plains and various other engagements in and around Atlanta, the Macon Campaign he was under general Cook's Command.
On June 9, 1865, he was honorably discharged with his regiment in Kentucky.
Returning home Mr. Redifer rented land in Riley township, Vigo County, Indiana and began farming on his own account.
Succeeding well in his operations, he purchased eighty acres of land included in his present homestead. Fifteen acres have been cleared and a log home and barn have been built. Since then Mr. Redifer has bought another tract of eighty acres, and by exercise of skill and good judgement has made valued improvements on his place, having placed the larger part of his land under a high state of cultivation, set out fruit and shade trees, and erected a fine set of frame buildings. Here he is carrying on general farming and stock raising in a most satisfactory manner, reaping abundant harvests evey year.

My grandfather became self supporting at the age of 12 years, working as a farm laborer. In August 1862, he enlisted in the Union Army and fought in many important battles, was honorably discharged on June 09, 1865. He started farming in Vigo County, he soon purchased 80 acres of ground in Clay county, just across the county line East of Vigo County, cleared off and cultivated it. Here he built a set of frame farm buildings and a new frame house, planted an orchard and shade trees. Since there was no veterinarian around, he was called upon to aid with the care and treatment of animals because of his experience in the the Cavalry during the Civil War. ( He now has a great grandson who is a veterinarian at a famous race track in New York), he is my nephew, son of Betty my sister. Dr Rustin McIntosh. Every generation since my grandfather have been interested in breeding, training and raising horses., by Helen L. Redifer Kiefner.,
