William's mother was Elizabeth Gregory, daughter of Thomas Gregory and Mary "Polly"Hawk. Elizabeth Redifer is mentioned in the will of her Uncle ( brother to her mother ) Abraham Hawk in 1843.
In 1852 his father moved the family to Clay County, Indiana , where they lived close by to William's Uncle Jesse and his family by 1860.
As times were difficult and money was hard to come by, many children were bound out so families to make ends meet, so was the case with William and some of his siblings that were unmarried at the time.
William went to live an work on the farm of the Jacob Goodrich family, his sister Margaret "Annie " and brother Alexander Redifer went to work as domestics with the Bell family in Posey township.

His oldest brother James had married Cordelia Ann Eppert and his father went to live with them and their seven children in Clay County, Indiana.
William was a young man with his life ahead of him like so many others, loyal and hard working he chose to enlist as did his brother John Namon Redifer, and in Missouri his two cousins Jacob Haldaman Redifer and his brother William Wesley Redifer also enlisted, both son's of his father's brother Chesley Kenny Redifer.
