ALICE VIOLA TARVIN, known as Ikie, was born 27 Dec 1913 in Staunton, Clay Co., Indiana, the third child of John Weaver Tarvin and Rebecca Walzer. She earned 1936 a B.S. degree from Indiana State University. She taught physical education in Staunton and Terre Haute, Indiana, for a total of 41 years. Among her hobbies were antiques, ceramics, knitting, and photography. For several years, she lived west of Brazil, Indiana, in an old house along the National Road that she had restored herself. Later, she lived in a new home in Brazil, Indiana, built by students taking building trades classes in local schools.
