PANHANDLE - Walter Louis Dittberner, 79, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in his home.

Services are pending with Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Mr. Dittberner was born in Carson County. He was a lifetime resident of Carson County. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in the Army Air Force. He married Helen Margaret Nickell on July 19, 1947. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Panhandle. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, VFW, Elks Lodge of Borger and was a charter member of the Panhandle Country Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993, and by a sister Alberta Anderson in 1978.

Survivors include one son, Chris of Pampa; one daughter, Nancy Brown of Pampa; one brother, Edward Dittberner of Panhandle; one sister, Joyce Johnson of Salem, S.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle or the Crown of Texas Hospice.

Walter Louis Dittberner, 79, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in Pampa.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church in Panhandle with the Rev. Kathryn Boren, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors.

Mr. Dittberner was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Carson County, to Herman Carl and Mary Nancy Dittberner. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1941. He was an Air Force veteran and served as a belly gunner instructor in World War II.

He was a member of Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge, a charter member of Panhandle Country Club and United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime resident of Panhandle and retired from farming in 1989.

He won numerous grain sorghum yield awards and the Ford Farm Efficiency Award. He married Helen Margaret Nickell on July 19, 1947.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1955; his mother in 1957; his wife on Feb. 27, 1993; and a sister, Alberta Anderson in 1979.

Survivors include a son, Chris Dittberner and wife, Pam, of Pampa; a daughter, Nancy Brown and husband, Joe, of Dumas; a brother, Ed Dittberner and wife, Ozella, of Panhandle; a sister, Joyce Johnson and husband, Jim, of Salem, S.C.; four grandchildren, Clay Cheek of Gatesville, Crystal Perez of San Antonio, and Kimberly Brown and Michael Dittberner both of Pampa; and two great-grandchildren, Alex Perez and Kaitlin Perez, both of San Antonio.

The family suggests memorials be to Panhandle United Methodist Church; or Crown of Texas Hospice.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
