Cleo J. Carter Sr., 89, of New London, died at 2:43 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at New London Nursing & Rehab Center.
Born Aug. 3, 1914, in Steelville, Mo., he was the son of Ferd and Cora Holbert Carter. On Sept. 2, 1936, he married Letha McNamee in Arvada, Colo. She died March 11, 2003.
Mr. Carter worked as a farmhand, lumberjack and greenhouse laborer early in life. He owned Carter & Son Construction in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a skilled craftsman. Later he was supervisor at Mary-Dayle Ranch. He retired from J.I. Case after 14 years.
He attended school in Missouri. He was of the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the New London Country Club and UAW Local 807. He was an avid master gardener in retirement, raising huge gardens. He also enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Cleo J. Carter Jr. and William E. Carter, both of New London; one daughter, Veronda J. Pickle of New London; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Floyd Carter of Hot Springs, Ark., Russell Carter of Goodland, Kan., Don Carter of Morrison, Colo., and Jess Carter of Denver; and two sisters, Marie Ruble of Fort Collins, Colo., and Earlene Noles of Fort Morgan, Colo.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Carter will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel, with the Rev. Phil Borleske officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.
Memorials have been established for the New London Rescue Unit and New London Nursing and Rehab Center activity fund.
