The January 30, 1863 edition of The Freeman's Journal announced Stephen's death:
"ACCIDENT AND DEATH - We learn that Stephen Hopkins, who resides in Otego, on the Otsdawa Creek, while returning home from West Oneonta last Monday night and when near the Saw-Mill on the Old-Turnpike, the road being icy, the wagon slued off the bank, taking the team with it and throwing him out, and one of the horses fell on him, killing him instantly. - Oneonta Herald."
