Ira L Deardorff, 66, of near McKnightstown, died Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 in the Warner hospital from the effects of a stroke two weeks ago. He was admitted to the hospital October 23 and for a time showed improvement. However, he took a turn for the worse October 29 and steadily declined.
The deceased was born in the house in which he lived all his life, excepting two years spent at New Freedom, and was a son of the late Jacob and Eliza (Lady) Deardorff. He practiced farming all his life excepting the two years spent in New Freedom during which he was employed by the Atlantic Refining company.
For 27 years he was teacher of the Excelsior Sunday school class of Flohr’s Lutheran church of which he was an active member and worker. He had a record of 12 years of perfect attendance at Sunday school although not in successive years. The deceased served one term as school director of Franklin township.
Surviving are his widow, the former Clara C Weikert, to whom he was married December, 1908; one son, John J at home and the following 11 brothers and sisters; Mrs. C A Hershey, Gettysburg; Mrs. John C Bream, Gettysburg RD; Ross R, Plainfield, New Jersey; Mrs. J B Bushey, near Arendtsville; J Gilbert, Trenton, New Jersey; Mrs. Walter Lott, Gardners; Clarence D, McKnightstown; Mrs. V S Watson, Oakland, California; Mrs. Homer Shaw, New Kensington; Mrs. Philip Bower, Emmitsburg, and Mrs. Lolita Charles, McKnightstown.
Brief funeral services from the late home Saturday afternoon at 1:30 with further services at 2:00 at Flohr’s Lutheran church conducted by the Rev George H Berkheimer, pastor. Interment in Flohr’s cemetery.
