John U Cook, 97, who was a child of almost three when cavalry troops fought in his native Cashtown, Lee's men marched past his door enroute to Gettysburg and on retreat from it, died at 8:00 this morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. John Snyder, 1420 Lincolnway East, Chambersburg.
Mr. Cook had resided all of his life in the Cashtown area until about 18 months ago when he became ill and went to lie with his daughter at Chambersburg.
The former farmer, who was born September 20, 1860, in the Cashtown vicinity, was a son of John and Matilda Martha Lauver Cook. His wife, the former Mary L Mortiz, died a number of years ago. He was a member of the Flohr's Church and of the POS of A.
Surviving are 40 descendants; five children, Brite Cook, Cashtown; Mrs. Snyder, Chambersburg, with whom he had resided; Howard Cook, Littlestown R 2; Mrs. Charles Stoner, Fairfield, and Miss Belva Cook, Orrtanna; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services Friday morning at 10:30 from the Peters Funeral Home, Carlisle Street, with the Rev. Dr. Harvey D Hoover officiating. Interment in the Flohr's Church cemetery. The family has asked that flowers be omitted.
