Ruth Roberts was born in Washington County, Virginia, near the city of Abingdon, August 31, 1807, and died in Hancock County, Indiana, July 17th, 1907, being 99 years, 10 months, and 16 days old. Her parents were Richard and Elizabeth Roberts, the latter of whom died only about twenty years ago, at the age of 98 years.
The deceased was the last and oldest of a family of eleven children to answer the call of death. She was united in marriage to Joseph Clayton, July 12, 1826. She continued to live in Virginia until November 1834, when she came with her husband and four children to Indiana, leaving a little son, Richard, buried in the bosom of her native state, and bidding good-bye, as it proved, for life to her loving parents, brothers and sisters, and hosts of other relatives and friends.
The trip to Indiana was made in a covered wagon. They arrived in Greenfield, Hancock County, and lived for a time in an old log cabin, before going to Franklin County, where they spent two years. Upon returning to Hancock County, they settled one mile east of Greenfield, on the National Road, where they built another log cabin and began the work of removing the timber from the land surrounding their home.
Becoming dissatisfied, they again emigrated, to Iowa, where they lived two years, returning at the end of that period and taking possession of the house they vacated upon starting to Iowa. They then purchased a forty-acre farm two miles northeast of Greenfield , which was known as the Clayton homestead.
Death entered the home of Mrs. Clayton and claimed her companion, November 29th, 1869, after a long and trying illness. Mrs. Clayton continued to live at the old home with her unmarried children and for thirty years lived alone.
Mrs. Clayton is hte mother of eleven children, seven of whom, emeline Leamon, James , Nancy C. Lamb, Isaac, Martha Wiggins, John and Sarah M. Winslow are living.
