Hazel Scurlock Walker, 91 of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on April 16, 2011. Born in Crockett, Texas on December 12, 1919, Hazel was the youngest child of the pre-deceased Jeff Scurlock and Florence Bishop Scurlock. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Julius C. Walker and her infant son Michael.
A career educator with the Houston Independent School District, Hazel received both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Prairie View A&M University. After retiring from teaching in 1980, she continued to be active in her community and education services. She was also a member of the Top Ladies of Distinction (TLOD) for many years.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Rita F. Pierson and her husband Clarence, grandchildren Carlo Burnside and his wife Sharon, Kelby Pierson, Kristin Wright and her husband Ivey, great grandchilden, Marissa, Parker and Maddox Wright, and numerous relatives and friends. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Hazel's caregivers, Tracy Canada, Charlesetta Busby, Betty Tyler and Queenie Bray for thier loving and devoted service.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21 from 9:00 - 10:45 a.m. at the Mount Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church 908 E. 32 1/2 Street, Houston, Texas. The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. with interment at Paradise North Cemetery.
