Joseph died in Hoten POW Camp in Manchuria, after suffering many privations in the hold of Totorri Maru, a Japanese "hell-ship", while in transit from the Philippines to Pusan, Korea, where he was then shipped to Mukden, Manchuria. Mukden is now known as Shengyang, China. Joseph died at Hoten from dysentery, beri-beri and pneumonia.
