John E. Barkowski
Natrona Heights

John E. Barkowski, 89, of Natrona Heights, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, in UPMC Shadyside Hospital, after a heroic battle with complications from diabetes. He was born Jan. 10, 1918, in West Natrona, the son of the late Ignatius and Cecilia (Pczynska) Barkowski. John attended Holy Family Institute Orphanage from 1929 until 1938. In 1938, he graduated from Duquesne Prep, a preparatory school sponsored by Duquesne University. Later, John joined the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Seabees. His company was one of the first to hit the beach on Iwojema. John was incredibly proud of his country and honored to serve in World War II. His commitment and courage did not remain unrecognized as he later received the American Theatre, Asiatic, Pacific and Victory medals. His brother, Joseph, was killed in the Death March Battle of Batton. John never forgot his brother, Joseph's legacy and he always admired his courage and strength. After serving his country, John worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Brackenridge as a mason-bricklayer for 43 years. He took pride in his work and held a deep respect for his craft. Some of his private masonry work can still be seen today in many areas of the Alle-Kiski Valley. Always involved in the community, John was a former member of the Slovak Club, PRCU, American Legion and Booster Club of Most Blessed Sacrament. John was also faithful to God and served as a member of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Natrona Heights. John loved his family and enjoyed simply spending time with them. Other favorite pastimes included solving crossword puzzles and all sports, especially Duquesne University, Steelers and Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He is survived by his beloved children, Connie (Barry) Fibus, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Thea Weleski, of Natrona Heights, and Mark (Judy) Barkowski, of Buffalo Township; grandchildren, Lauren Weleski, of Brackenridge, Megan Weleski, of Natrona Heights, Jaime (Leo) Barch, of Leechburg, Tiffany (Roger) Aulicino, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Lyndsey Fibus, of San Diego, Calif., Brett Fibus, of Tucson, Ariz., and Drew Fibus, of Tempe, Ariz.; three great-grandchildren, Sara Barch and Madyson and Samantha Aulicino; and several neices and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Joan (Falkowski) Barkowski on May 6, 1970; five brothers, Edward, Stanley, Joseph, Louis and Chester Barkowski; and a sister, Mamie Painter. Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the CICHOLSKI-ZIDEK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1522 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights, where a blessing service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30 a.m. in Most Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights. The family of John Barkowski expresses their gratitude for all acts of kindness and love shown during this time.
