ROGERSVILLE - J.C. Kensinger, age 93, Rogersville, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, in an automobile accident.
He was the oldest World War II veteran in Hawkins County, serving in the United States Navy. He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County, seventh generation of his line. He was a retired druggist, having owned and operated both City Drug and Medical Center. He was a charter member of the Rogersville Planning Commission, having recently received an award for 50 years of service. He served on the Persia Water Board for many years. In addition to seven residences, he built Medical Center and two other Main Street stores. He served many years as treasurer of the Hawkins County Democratic Party, and in his retirement sold real estate.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Chambers "Neal" Kensinger and Laura Thurman Kensinger; an infant brother, Edward, and brother, Bill Kensinger; a sister, Helen Ayers; and a half-sister, Mary Davenport.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ray Kensinger of the home; daughter Jann (Mrs. Charles E.) Walker, Jonesville, VA; six grandchildren, Charles "Chucky" Walker, Huntington, WV, James "Jim" Walker, Youngsville, Teressa Pelfrey, Huntington, Meg Shaw, Elkhorn, CA, Millie Hale, Wake Forest, NC; seven great-grandsons; five great-granddaughters; a great-great-granddaughter; a sister, Matilda "Tillie" (Mrs. Robert) Livesay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Rogersville Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Hale officiating. Interment followed in McKinney Cemetery.
Arrangements were under direction of Colboch-Price Funeral Home, Rogersville.
