Caldwell's History of Indiana Co. (1880), pp. 479-480:

WILLIAM G. STEWART was born in 1816, in Armstrong township, and was a son of John and Elizabeth Stewart. (See sketch of A. M. Stewart of Indiana, for notes on the Stewarts.) John was a hunter when a young man, and afterwards learned the tailor trade. He removed nine miles north of the county seat, and in 1827, commenced merchandising at the "Cross Roads," which is now included within the farm of T. St.Clair Thompson. In 1831, our subject was sent to Georgeville, to clerk in the store which his father had opened in that village. That year will be remembered for the "laying out" of the village. William G. was a carpenter by trade, but generally engaged in farming. For several years he conducted a store near and in Georgeville. He also taught thirty terms of school in the Mahoning, one in Rayne, one in White, and one in Zanesville, Ohio. He served one term as county commissioner and one as county auditor. Since 1848, with the exception of four years, he has resided in East Mahoning township, about one mile north of Marion. This place was first settled by an unknown person. The next improvement was made by George Stump. For the children of our subject and the war record of his sons, see sketch of John A. Stewart, East Mahoning township.
