Captain John Murphy DeVane, Jr. (USN Ret.) passed away on February 18, 2006. John was born October 14, 1915 in Fayetteville, North Carolina to John Murphy DeVane and Cantey Venable Reed. He graduated from the United State Naval Academy in Annapolis and after an initial tour of duty aboard the USS Saratoga, (CV-3) he received his Aviator's Wings in 1939. While attached to the USS Ranger (CV-4) as Operations Officer for Bomber Squadron Four (VB-4, the famous "Top Hatters") during the North African Invasion, he received the Navy Cross for valor. After 29 years of distinguished service, he retired from the Navy to embark on his second career as an engineer for Boeing. In 1941, he married Edith Gwendolyn Spratt of Jacksonville, Florida who remained his loving companion until her passing in 2005. He is survived by his four children: Gwen DeVane McNenney of Sebastian, Florida; Jane Reed DeVane of Bethesda, Maryland; John Murphy DeVane, III of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Mary Venable DeVane Magill of Edmonds, Washington; he also leaves his nine grandchildren: Cristina Alberni, David McNenney, Brian McNenny, Jennifer Jean DeVane, Kimberly DeVane, John Murphy DeVane IV, Eileen Magill, Samuel Magill and Kristen DeVane Bell. John was a devoted husband, a loving father and loyal friend to the many who knew and loved him. A Celebration of John's Life will be held at Mary's home on Saturday, March 4, 2006 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. A Private Family Committal to be held at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery in Shoreline. Memorials in John's name may be sent to Providence Hospice of Seattle. Arrangements: Beck's Funeral Home, Edmonds, (425) 771-1234.
