Lena Marie Metcalf, 94 of Arkansas City died Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Lena Marie Davison Metcalf was born in Joplin, Mo., November 25, 1915, a twin to J.W. Davison and Lena Sweetland Davison. Lena and her twin Leon (Lynn) Milas Davison were the youngest siblings with three older brothers and one sister.
The Davison family moved to Anthony, Kansas when she was 15 months old. They later moved to the Caldwell area where she attended school before moving to Winfield where she graduated high school. After graduation the family moved to the rural Dexter area where Lena met her future husband Cecil S. Metcalf. They were married at Hicks Chapel Church near Dexter on October 10, 1935.
Lena and Cecil moved to the Metcalf farmstead in 1941 and continued farming. The couple were always very active in the Hicks Chapel community, especially sponsoring youth activities and Lena taught Sunday School and Bible School. She prepared many meals for the appointed preacher. The couple sold the farm and moved to Arkansas City in 1957, where Lena went to work at the Memorial Hospital as a nurse aid. She studied and passed the state board and became a CORT (Certified Operating Room Technician) and worked in that capacity for 25 years. After retiring she volunteered with the hospital auxiliary, serving as president for several years.
After the loss of her husband Cecil in 1993, Lena remained in their home until July of 1999 when she felt it was time to give up her beautiful flowers and take life easier, so she made the decision to move to an apartment at the Presbyterian Manor. While living there she was chairman of the council for six years and taught an adult Sunday School class for over 20 years at the Friends Church. She also sang with a musical group "The Twillighters" for several years.
She is survived by one son Gary and Nancy of Wickenburg, AR/Pagosa Springs, CO, two daughters: Cecilia and Don Nelson of Arkansas City; Pat and Tom Estes of Sherman, TX, ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Bea Davison of Graham, TX. , sister-in-law Francis Davison of Hobbs, NM., and a hoist of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil, son Darrell, her parents, four brothers, Damon, Leland, Gerald, Leon and one sister Olive Rush.
Memorials have been established with the Friends Church or Hicks Chapel Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home
