Cecilia Marie (Metcalf) Nelson, age 86, passed away on December 20, 2022, at the Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor.

Cecilia was born on September 23, 1936, at a private home in Winfield, the first of four children born to Cecil and Lena (Davison) Metcalf. The family lived in the Dexter/Cedar Vale area. In 1945 at the age of nine, Cecilia had a severe lung disease and spent several days in the hospital before recovering.

Her father, Cecil, coached the Dexter girls' softball team that Cecilia played on, along with her cousin Esther, Reulena Cox, and Cleota Martin. In her junior year of high school, she was named Ms. Otto and rode through the Arkalalah Parade before graduating from Cedar Vale High School in 1955. During the summer following graduation, Cecilia and her cousin Esther ran Otto Telephone while living in a small apartment in the back. In the fall she moved to Arkansas City to attend Cowley College and got a job at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Cecilia continued to work for the Bell system until they went to the dial system and the friendly "Hello, number please" was no longer needed.

Cecilia married Donald L Nelson on April 21, 1957, on a rainy Easter Sunday at Hick's Chapel in Dexter. They spent their honeymoon at Rockway Beach, MO. They made their first home in an apartment on west Chestnut Street in Arkansas City. To this union were born three daughters, Pamela Sue, Brenda Jo, and Donna Marie. Cecilia was a devoted mother, sewing her daughter's clothes, Halloween costumes, Barbie clothes, and later outfits for her grandchildren. The family was active members of the Friends Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and the church treasurer.

In 1970, Cecilia began working for the 470 School District. First as a secretary for Duane Stewart at Pershing and Roosevelt Schools, then she moved up to the Middle School as secretary to Principal John Lee. Finally, she was promoted to the High School as financial secretary which was located on south Second Street, and finally made it to Cowley College as a receptionist retiring in 2001. Cecilia worked for the school system for around 31 years. For several weeks during the summer of 1995, she worked as a secretary at the Quivira Boy Scout Camp in Sedan which she really enjoyed.

Cecilia loved her family, Elvis, reading, roses, taking her grandchildren on adventures, going to garage sales, and attending auctions with Don. At many auctions, you would find her in the pickup reading while Don attended the auction. She also loved to walk or ride her bicycle around town. She passed her love of ice cream, especially hot fudge sundaes, to her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In 1993 following the closure of Rodeo Meats, Don's career took the couple to live in North Carolina. During that time Cecilia was always in touch with family and was an avid pen pal with her grandchildren. Don and Cecilia were able to return to Arkansas City in 1996 where they made residence at the intersection of Poplar and D Street.

Cecilia was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L Nelson, her parents, brother Darrell Leon Metcalf and niece Kim Dozier.

She is survived by her three daughters, Pam (Leon) Schneider, Brenda (Mike) Welch, and Donna Harris; six grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and four nephews.

On December 29, 2022, the funeral procession will meet at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home leaving at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Dexter Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Following the burial, a Celebration of Cecilia's Life will be held at the Parkerfield Community Center, 29271 91st Rd, Parkerfield, KS.
