John was the son of Robert Allison and Nancy Riddle. He married Rebeca Jane James ca. 1829.

John and Rebeca were the parents of eleven children:
1. Rebecca J. Allison
2. Nancy Jane (Allison) Dilts
3. Robert Allison (died young)
4. William Riddle Allison
5. Andrew B. Allison
6. "Hamilton" Alexander Hamilton Allison
7. "Ada" Adaline Elizabeth (Allison) Kinter
8. "Maggie" Margaret I. Allison
9. "Harvey" John Harvey Allison
10. "Cromwell" Robert Cromwell Allison
11. Sophia Catherine (Allison) Kinter

Note: John's middle name is seen as "Riddle" (his mother's maiden name), "Robert" (his father's and grandfather's names) and also "Robert Riddle." The death certificates of his children consistently report just "John R. Allison," which is shown on his gravestones. If anyone has proof for his middle name, please contact me.
