Julia was born February 16, 1909, in St. Anthony, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Lucy Myrtle Mae (Clark) Borton. She was raised and educated in St. Anthony. Julia graduated as class valedictorian from St. Anthony High School on May 25, 1928. She then attended business school in Marshalltown. Julia was united in marriage to Eldon Cooling on April 14, 1929, in Mason City, Iowa. She was a homemaker and mother to her twelve children throughout her lifetime. Julia enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting, but most of all she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother to her family.

Julia is survived by her eight sons: Garol (Ruth) Cooling of LeGrand, Vernon (Ruthie) Cooling of Garwin, Dale Cooling of Solon, Lloyd (Lois) Cooling of Ely, Lyle (Joyce) Cooling of Solon, Dallas (Mary) Cooling of Solon, Duane (Debbie) Cooling of Gilman, Gary (Lou Ann) Cooling of LeGrand, her daughter: Margaret (Dick) Hajek of Solon, two daughters-in-law Joyce Cooling of Victor and Esther Cooling of Cedar Rapids, a son-in-law L.P. Walters of Madison, Indiana, 39 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great grandchildren.

Julia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Eldon, her step-mother Maurie Borton, her two sons: Darol and Arthur, a daughter LaVonne Walters, four brothers: Roy, Howard, Louis and Lee, sister: Minnie Tjelmeland, two grandsons: Rick and Ray Cooling and her three great-grandchildren: Philip and Sarah Cooling and Ethan Hungerford.
