Obit Bertram Britton, former Harmony resident and retired railroad brakeman, died at 3:10 o'clock this morning in Clay County Hospital following an illness of several weeks. He was 86 and lived at 1716 N 30th St Terra Haute.
Mr. Britton lived here and in Clay CO for 45 years. He was born in Harmony on Dec 19, 1878 to the late Samuel and Mary Ellen (Monk) Britton. Employed for a long period by the C. & E.I. Railroad, he earlier worked in the Brazil Division and on the main line from Terre Haute to Chicago. He later moved to Danville, IL when assigned the run from there to Chicago, He retired in 1945.
Mr. Britton was a member of the Harmony band, that was in existence after the turn of the century and known throughout the state, He was formerly a member of the Brazil Masonic Lodge and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
Surviving are two daughters, Miss Thelma Britton and Mrs. Floyd (Charlotte) Auld, both of Terre Haute. A son, Bertram Britton Jr, of Fort Wayne, One brother, Harry Britton of West Terre Haute, and several grandsons , nieces, nephews, and other close relatives.
Mr. Britton's wife the former Nellie Nussel preceded him in death in 1938. Services will be conducted at Miller and Sons funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev Jack Masters will officiate and interment will be in Cottage Hill Cem. Friends may call to pay their respects at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday.
