John worked at the CC Camps in Cusson from 1930 to 1941, after which time he went to work as a welder for National Iron Works in San Diego until 1943. Upon joining the Navy Seabees during World War II he was stationed at the Aleutian Islands. He was discharged in 1946 and came back to Eveleth and was employed by U.S. Steel as a grader and crane operator until his retirement in 1982, after 36 years of service. On Aug. 21, 1948, John was united in marriage to Florence M. Skofich. John was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Mesaba Range Post 1172 Veterans of Foreign Wars, United Steelworkers Local 1938 and Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees. Hockey was John's favorite sport and he loved watching the games. He also enjoyed traveling, eating out at the Holiday Inn and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Florence; children, John (Laurie) Prebarich, Joanne Prebarich, and Gloria J. (Jim) Ravnikar; brother, Steve (LaVerne) Prebarich; step-grandchildren, James (Kristina) Ravnikar and their children Olivia and Abigail, and Tony Mason; sisters, Rose Dzubnar and Lucy (Ralph) Fosmo; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Madeline Kochevar, Mary Erchul, Anne Penoncello and Katherine Putzel; and brothers, Frank Prebonich and Nick Prebonich.
Interment will be in Eveleth Cemetery.
