U.S. Senator. He graduated from Yale College with a law degree in 1829, practice law and engaged in agricultural pursuits. He was a member, Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1832, 36, 38) and chairman of the board of education of Connecticut, (1849-65). In 1854, he was elected as a Free Soil candidate to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Truman Smith, serving until 1855. Not a candidate for reelection, he was president of the of the Connecticut State Normal School, a partner in the Evening Press newspaper and was involved in the real estate business until his death at age 71.
