Ernest L. Harp, 88, East Hamilton Avenue, died Thursday evening, Feb. 23, 2012 in Oneida Healthcare Center where he had been a patient for the past day.
Born in Oneida on Jan. 9, 1924, he was a son of LeRoy and Anna Mae McCormick Harp. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a graduate of Oneida High School. He married Betty Cullen in Philadelphia, Pa. on July 31, 1945. Mrs. Harp died June 3, 1994.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Harp was employed with Oneida Limited Silversmiths. He was a member of the Oneida Limited Retirement Club and the Community Associated Clubs and was of the Catholic faith. Ernest was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific with the United States Marine Corps., joining the Marine Corps at the age of 16.
Surviving are a son, Richard Johns of Oneida; five grandchildren, Susan Winchell, Charles "Scooter" VanSlyke, Edward VanSlyke, Donna McKenzie and Carol Burgdoff; two sisters, Ruby Durant of Hamilton and Lillian Prescott of Tennessee; two half sisters, Marie Zophy of Canastota and Edith and Donald Froelick of Oneida; four half brothers, James and Bihyun Candee of Ovedo, Fla., Eugene and Janet Candee of Oneida, Raymond and Kathy Candee of Oneida and William "Butch" and Sue Candee of Las Vegas, Nev. He was predeceased by two daughters, Karen VanSlyke on March 25, 2000 and Marquerite "Cookie" Eddy on Sept. 17, 1972, one son, Bruce Harp in 1958, one grandson, Gary VanSlyke and four brothers, Edward, George, Richard and Robert Harp.
Funeral services with military honors will be held 2 p.m., Monday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida. Interment will be made in Oneida Castle Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, noon to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service.
